Canada Post peak period from 2 November: higher surcharges, narrower late guarantee

Adopted · updated 2 November 2026 · North America
Next date: 2 Nov 2026

Canada Post's customer notice of 2 September says that for items mailed from Monday 2 November 2026 to Sunday 10 January 2027 the oversize and unpackaged surcharge rises from $21 to $30 and the out-of-spec surcharge from $300 to $400. In the same period Canada Post will honour late-delivery guarantee claims on Priority, Xpresspost and Expedited Parcel items mailed within Canada only when the item arrives two or more business days after the delivery standard. The notice does not name the currency or say who bears the surcharge: it applies to items mailed under the customer's agreement.

For a parcel Bulky or unpackaged items mailed in the peak period cost more to send, and a parcel must be two or more business days late before the shipper can claim under the delivery guarantee.

What to prepare

  • Reprice bulky and unpackaged items for 2 November to 10 January and decide whether to pass the surcharge on to customers
  • Do not rely on the late-delivery guarantee for peak delivery promises, since it pays only from two business days late
  • Compare with other carriers' 2026 peak notices as they appear; the Purolator page we opened covered only the 2025 peak

Our reading

The notice raises the price of the hardest parcels to handle and narrows what shippers can claim at the busiest time, which moves risk from Canada Post to the shipper. The recipient sees the surcharge only if the shipper passes it on. We found no 2026 peak notice from Purolator, UPS or FedEx Canada on pages we could open, and nothing from forwarders or brokers on how they will apply Canada Post's notice, so a comparison is not yet possible.
