Adopted · updated 1 October 2026 · reviewed 23 October 2026 · North America
Next date: 1 Nov 2026

Canada Post plans to convert about four million addresses that still receive door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes over about five years. About 686,000 addresses in 55 communities are now scheduled for late 2026 or 2027: Sept-Îles and Winnipeg were first, completed in October 2026, followed by Etobicoke, Moncton and Riverview in November, and about 485,000 addresses in 37 communities, including Calgary and Edmonton, from 2027. It is also reviewing post office networks in urban and suburban areas it considers over-served. Canada Post also said weekend parcel delivery is rolling out in stages from October.

For a parcel Small parcels that fit a community mailbox go there instead of the door, and larger ones are more likely to end at a pickup point, which changes first-attempt delivery and the customer experience.

What to prepare

  • Review Canadian delivery promises and tracking messages for addresses moving to community mailboxes
  • Assess demand for lockers and pickup points in the communities converting first, starting with Winnipeg and Sept-Îles
  • Watch for parcel-size rules at community mailboxes that affect packaging choices

Our reading

The change cuts Canada Post's delivery cost but may push some e-commerce volume to carriers that still deliver to the door. With the first conversions under way and 2027 lists growing, the programme is moving faster than its five-year frame suggests, though local opposition could still slow individual communities.
