North Africa as Europe's gateway

Europe wants supply chains closer to home and away from contested sea lanes, and Morocco sells itself as the industrial back office on its doorstep while Chinese investors use it as a base to serve European factories. At the same time Rabat, Cairo, Algiers and Tunis tighten their own borders, so the region gets easier to route through and harder to sell into.

4Parcel impact
  • ↑ Speed

Faster restocking: services back on Suez save up to 14 days eastbound, and about four weeks for one Asia to Europe loop compared with the Cape.135136

  • ↑ Network

More relay at Moroccan hubs means more feeder legs into EU ports and more reliance on ro-ro truck capacity across the Strait of Gibraltar.130128

  • ↑ Compliance

Egypt pushes compliance upstream: no air shipment should load without an ACID number, with CargoX platform fees reported at $200 to $300.122123

  • ↑ Cost

Inbound e-commerce parcels into Morocco pay duties such as 40% on clothing plus 20% VAT.120121

Our read

Our reading: Moroccan hubs gain from Suez rerouting and EU carbon rules on sea relay and consolidated B2B loads, but the EU's per-parcel charges make direct consumer parcels from Morocco no cheaper than from Asia. Clearing upstream with duties shown at checkout is the condition for selling into Morocco and Egypt, while Algeria and Tunisia stay approval-led B2B markets.
